I am trying to figure out the extra hives/nuc boxes & general kit I will need for next year. Have been working on the rough assumption for every 2 complete hives for colonies to have 1 spare hive for AS etc.. Should I be looking at complete hives to equal the number of colonies I want to keep...

A possible explanation would be that you had Masonry bees living in the outside wall where you have now got the extension. This has become part of the inner house and your central heating has woken them early as I don't think they are around until April. That is why they appear a bit dopey. Peter
