What's flowering as forage in your area

Noticed a couple of fairly yellow OSR fields half a mile from home today. Wandered down to the bees and they are going like gangbusters. The Victoria plum tree just breaking into blossom.

Where do forum members (those who buy their queens) buy their queens from?

I've only ever bought queens from Exmoor bees and beehives. I'm sure there are many other good suppliers but as far as I'm concerned, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    Stand height

Make it as comfortabe for you as possible, the bees don't care. If you are happy spending 20 minutes bent over to pull frames from a brood box over an 18inch stand, that's great. If you'd like the top of the brood box to be a further foot up, make the stand taller. In my experience, my back...

Newbie question: Where (and when) do I get bees?

I see you are from Shepton Mallet. I did the course in Shepton Mallet with Central when I started 10 years ago. It was a good course with somebody different taking each week and while I don't know if that is the same, I see from the SBKA website that the same person is supplying nucs of bees. I...

I'm just north of the Mendips, so not particularly cold. Normally I'm a champion dandelion grower, but this year, this was the first.

    Cut comb presentation

Very nice! Is that a Ross Round inside? In tin news, it seems tins leak. Even though "The honey is in a hard plastic case with a lid and then all packaged in a nice tin" (n)

    Cut comb presentation

I don't like the UK boxes. They are too small; after a couple of pieces of toast the honey is half gone. The BE ones take a sensible amount which is why I prefer them. They also let you see the comb which is good I think, but I agree they don't flatter the product due to their general flimsiness...

    Cut comb presentation

Bee Equipment do these which are the same size as the American cut comb containers, but they aren't as rigid. Rather, they are made of thinner plastic more like a margarine tub and feel flimsier. I found them disappointing compared to the American containers but was much happier with them than...

8oz Hex Jar Prices and Bottle and Co

No, the jars come lidless in boxes and the lids came in a separate box, in a plastic carrier bag with the handles tied. All looks clean, but I run everything through the dishwasher.

    Extractor spares

Our club bought Park's electric 4 frame radial extractor last year. It's a Lega manual which they electrified. Perhaps the same is true of your 9 frame model? The Lega website has some spare parts including bushings. Might be worth contacting them if your hardware store can't help, though they...
