Moved my bees to ROTHERHAM - 187 miles!

Thank you everyone for replying. I think I am going to like it very much here (once I've bought some thermals!). Thanks also for the comments about the practicalities of moving my bees. Monitoring the health of my bees is vital and part of my routine, I am relatively new to this (only my...

Thank you Peter, I've got it in the diary! See you there.

Moved my bees to ROTHERHAM - 187 miles!

Phew! That sounds scary. My original plan was to move them in the back of the car, but thankfully someone loaned me a trailer. Did the very late night shut up shop and the very early start but it all went smoothly.

Thank you Margaret Elisabeth for the bit of local colour. I ventured to Meadow Hall yesterday - free parking! I was impressed. I am certainly looking forward to making full use of the lovely countryside - we love to get our hiking boots on.

Moved my bees to ROTHERHAM - 187 miles!

Tee hee! I'm hoping that in time they will forgive me. Husband's job brought us up here. Only been here a week and it is COLD! I think I must be officially a soft southerner (even though I was born in in the North East). I'm sure I'll toughen up given time.

Moved my bees to ROTHERHAM - 187 miles!

I've just moved house from Hampshire to Rotherham - 187 miles. My two hives did very well indeed on the back of a trailer and are now at the bottom of my garden and looking unconcerned. So - my question. Any members of Rotherham Beekeeping Association out there? Please say hi - it would be...

    14 x 12 - Do they cut down swarming?

I moved from national brood to 14 x 12 after my first season. Don't think it made any difference, they still did exactly as they pleased despite the new 'des res'. Aly

    Newbee kneejerk reaction

Hi EricA, Great, that makes sense. I'll go in to the Q- box on Friday to see what they've been up to, and keep an eye on the weather and go into the Q+ one on either Sunday / Monday. Thanks again. Aly

    Newbee kneejerk reaction

Hi Beeno, thanks for replying but now I'm really confused! I put my old queen in a totally fresh box (no eggs), so won't she think that she has swarmed already? She's not absconded yet (although the weather has been foul). I wondered if they might think about supercedure, though, but thought...

    Newbee kneejerk reaction

Things looking better today. Now have two hives - one with my (now marked) queen, some stores. Didn't bother looking for eggs, just shut up shop as soon as I saw the queen cos they've had enough of my incompetence to put up with of late. The other hive contains the brood, loads of bees...

Pictures of your hives and where you keep them..

That is a truly awesome sight. Does it sometimes get a bit blowy up there though?

    Newbee kneejerk reaction

Thanks for all the advice - this is what I did. Shook them all into the empty brood chamber as advised, then QE, then brood on top of that, another QE (belt and braces), then the supers, crown board and roof. Tomorrow I'm gonna - move top brood box onto a spare floor, go through it and reduce...

Do other beeks have this problem

My bees do this too (also on 14 x 12) but unfortunately, I've not got a solution. I think I read somewhere that they like doing it so that their vibrations can be passed on more easily aiding communication but I don't know if that's true. They only do it on brood frames though, not on stores...

    Newbee kneejerk reaction

Thankfully I do! I've got a spare entire set up. So, bearing in mind I think I might have destroyed all the queen cells, what do you recommend as my next course of action? These are my ponderings..... Possibility a) I've probably still got my queen, I need to find her and mark her. So, I...
