What did you do in the Apiary today?

I think this year the bees have been covering all bases. I have two colonies currently superseding and found another with a single, charged cell, it was in the same condition a fortnight later.

Advice on a single sealed QC discovery

It's all about feeding, queen larvae receive way more attention, one of the reasons for huge cell builder colonies stuffed with nurse bees to ensure adequate feeding.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Five days, maybe, just maybe at a push six but we could be talking about hours in that case. There are a number of considerations, temperature being one, not all queens emerge on day sixteen.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

They won't be going anywhere until one of them emerge as you have the queen, just go back in a week.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I think it depends on the bees, I reduced a colony to one cell on Saturday, they all sat nicely on the combs, it was very pleasant.

    Affordable prewired assembled frames?

They are from a different supplier, he says so in one of his yootoob offerings.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

They've always been dummied. 18 frames gives them an ideal nest size and they over winter with no feeding.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My double broods are all that size ;)

Advice on a single sealed QC discovery

A queen from day 4, a newly hatched larva, can receive sufficient feeding to become an adequate queen. Ask yourself what queen breeders select when they graft. ;)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Set up an Amm colony with a screen board, three brood boxes and a couple of supers, nice big colony of beautiful bees. Went through the rest and found them very well populated and behaving themselves. Had a little collection of bees on one frame lug, they refused to move despite my request and...

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

You need to work out better communication.

    Instant Vap OA dispenser

Two 4AH batteries will easily treat thirty hives. I picked up a spare dispenser last year in Telford, with the idea that I could use that one for the nucs. No real need for it, just as easy to adjust the setting on the one I already had if I'm honest.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

In the lower box, I want the flying bees to make their way back home which is why she also gets the supers.

    Re-queening a very defensive hive

Solid board would work, they lose the benefit of heat from below but it's not a big deal.

    Re-queening a very defensive hive

You could introduce her to the upper brood? Assuming it's a box of mainly nurse bees, you could pop in a double screen board and get her accepted there before killing the old queen and then uniting.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

You moved the original, lower entrance and have the new, upper entrance facing the original direction. The confused bees are finding their old entrance has moved up a bit. When I add screen boards, the new entrance is 180 degrees to the old entrance, the old entrance remains the same and the...

    Just done my first split

They are the young nurse bees.

    Is beekeeping getting harder?

Some like that here too. You should see it along the A48 near Penhow and Caerwent, like snow drifts.
